**TL;DR:**

- MAS sets policy through the Singapore dollar, not an interest rate. Analysts expect it to tighten again on 14 October.
- A stronger dollar mainly helps with imported prices and travel. Your mortgage and savings feel it only indirectly, so check your own numbers instead of the headlines.

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) reviews its monetary policy on Wednesday, 14 October 2026, and all 10 analysts in a Reuters poll expect it to tighten. Tightening means letting the Singapore dollar strengthen faster. For most households, the effect shows up first in imported prices and overseas spending, and only indirectly in loans and savings.

## How does MAS monetary policy work?

Most central banks move an interest rate. MAS manages the Singapore dollar's exchange rate against a basket of currencies, known as the S$NEER, within a policy band. Its "slope" is how fast the dollar is allowed to appreciate. A steeper slope is a tighter stance.

MAS tightened in April 2026 and again "very slightly" in July, according to Reuters. Because MAS does not publish the slope as a number, any figure for it is an analyst estimate.

## Why are analysts expecting tightening this time?

Inflation is creeping up. In August, core inflation was 2.2% and headline inflation 2.3%, according to a joint MAS and Ministry of Trade and Industry release reported by CNA. MAS expects both to average 1.5% to 2.5% in 2026, so prices are still inside its range, but moving towards the top of it.

Reuters quotes Barclays economist Brian Tan expecting a 25 basis point rise in the slope, citing "the sheer magnitude of the AI boom". OCBC's Selena Ling sees "upside risk to core inflation" from the widening Middle East conflict. These are views, not outcomes. MAS may well surprise, as it did in July, when most economists had expected no change.

## Will a stronger Singapore dollar change what you pay?

Possibly, in small ways. Singapore imports most of what it consumes, so a stronger dollar can soften imported inflation over time. It can also stretch your Singapore dollar a little further on overseas trips. The trade-off is for exporters, whose goods become pricier abroad.

## Will your home loan repayments go up?

Not automatically. Most floating-rate mortgages are pegged to SORA, a money-market benchmark. In late September, 3-month compounded SORA was roughly 1.23%, per Cashew's tracker. MAS does not set SORA, and the link between currency tightening and SORA is indirect, with analysts debating the direction. The US Federal Reserve's September hike to 3.75% to 4% adds another moving part.

What matters more for you is your repricing date. If your lock-in or fixed period ends soon, ask your bank for a comparison of fixed and floating packages. This is general education, not personal advice.

## What about your savings and CPF?

Government securities are priced by auction rather than by MAS's currency stance. The 6-month T-bill cut-off yield was 1.90% on 8 October, versus 1.92% on 24 September, according to Beansprout, with bids rising to S$17.8 billion. That is a tiny move, despite the noise around rates.

CPF is a separate story. Rates for October to December 2026 are unchanged: 2.5% for the Ordinary Account and 4% for the Special, MediSave and Retirement Accounts, with the 4% floor extended to 31 December 2027, per the CPF Board.

For a fuller comparison, see [why your CPF now pays more than T-bills and Savings Bonds in 2026](https://www.thefinancialcoconut.com/blog/why-your-cpf-now-pays-more-than-t-bills-and-savings-bonds-in-2026) and The Financial Coconut's [primer on T-bills and Singapore government bonds](https://www.thefinancialcoconut.com/blog/revisit-tbill-sg-gov-bonds-as-investment-option). For how an earlier rate cycle played out for investors, here is [what the Fed's rate cut meant for Singaporeans](https://www.thefinancialcoconut.com/blog/fed-rate-cut-affect-singapore-investors).

## What should you check after the announcement?

- Your mortgage repricing date and package type (fixed or floating).
- Whether your idle cash is earning more in T-bills, fixed deposits or Singapore Savings Bonds.
- Your overseas spending plans, if you travel often.

## FAQ

1. **What time and day does MAS announce its monetary policy?**
The October 2026 review is scheduled for Wednesday, 14 October 2026, according to Reuters. MAS's own calendar should be checked for the release time.
2. **Does MAS change interest rates?**
No. MAS uses the Singapore dollar exchange rate as its main tool, by adjusting the slope, width or centre of the S$NEER policy band.
3. **Will my mortgage rate rise if MAS tightens?**
Not directly. Floating loans follow SORA, and the link between MAS's currency stance and SORA is indirect.
4. **Are CPF interest rates affected by the MAS decision?**
No. CPF rates for the fourth quarter of 2026 are already set, with the 4% floor on Special, MediSave and Retirement Account monies extended to 31 December 2027.

## In summary

MAS's 14 October review is worth watching, but your wallet is shaped more by your loan package, where your cash sits and how often you travel.
